Error
Description
Discovered in 2010, the 1922-S VAM-1E2 is catalogued as 1E2 II1 B1a for Triple Clash Spikes Eagle's Shoulder, Beveled Hair Front, rated I-2 R-5. The reverse is defined by three clash spikes projecting upward from the eagle's right shoulder, with the leftmost spike distinctly separated from the other two. Faint die lines at the spike locations are residual evidence of the die-to-die contact event. Die filing added two faint additional rays in the middle of the eagle's left wing — a mint workman's attempt to address clash damage through polishing. The obverse die II 1 shows a slightly beveled field at the hair front and front of a ray, product of die polishing, along with vertical die file lines at WE. A nomenclature note: this variety was previously catalogued as VAM-1H2 and VAM-1P before consolidation into its current designation. The clarity of three distinct spikes emerging from the eagle's shoulder makes this among the more memorable varieties in the 1922-S series. The 1922-S Peace Dollar was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco.
