Description

Preserving evidence of post-hubbing die work that altered the coin's surface geometry, the 1922-S VAM-1AF was discovered by David Close in 2012 and features a beveled field at Liberty's profile — a subtle modification created when the die was polished in a manner that slightly angled the field surface adjacent to the portrait. Designated 1AF II1 with reverse die B2a (Beveled Field at Profile), rated I-3 for higher interest and R-5 for rarity (an estimated 1,001 to 3,000 surviving), this variety documents a die preparation technique rather than a manufacturing error. The polished field created a slightly beveled transition between the flat field and raised portrait relief, visible as a gentle slope or reflectivity change along the profile boundary. Die polishing was routinely performed to extend die life, but when the polishing wheel contacted the die face at a slight angle near a design element, it could create this distinctive effect. Struck at San Francisco in 90% silver at 38.1mm. Examine the field adjacent to Liberty's profile for the bevel, best observed under angled lighting.
