Description

Multiple forms of die deterioration converge on this 1922-D Peace Dollar variety, discovered by Peter Hohnstein in February 2011 and designated for its pitted left obverse, die scratch on the eagle's leg, rim cud at the letters AC, and die break at the letter U. The reverse carries the most dramatic feature: a die break at the rim above the left side of U in UNITED, with a die crack extending through the letters UNIT and into the top of PLURI — tracing a fracture path across multiple inscription elements that maps the progressive failure of the reverse die. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar, introduced in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I, features a radiant Liberty portrait on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse, both rendered in sufficient relief to register die deterioration clearly. The deep sub-variety classification "1T3" reflects the extensive study applied to this die pairing, with multiple observable features combined into a single attribution. Denver struck over 15.1 million Peace Dollars in 1922, and the accumulation of pitting, scratches, cuds, and breaks on this die pair suggests it was kept in service well into its declining working life.
