Description

Carrying the designation "Pitted Left Obverse, Die Scratch Leg, Rim Cud at AC," this 1922-D Peace Dollar variety documents a die exhibiting multiple forms of deterioration and damage. Discovered in 2010, the variety had been submitted to LVA (Leroy Van Allen) earlier that year but was initially declined before subsequent review led to acceptance. Plate notation 1T2 II1 - B1a classifies the obverse as a II1 type with a B1a reverse. The reverse carries the most dramatic diagnostic: a rim cud extending into the field below AC of PEACE, where a piece of the die broke away at the rim and left a raised blob of unstruck metal on struck coins. Die pitting on the left obverse indicates the die surface had begun to deteriorate, developing small pits that transferred as raised bumps. A die scratch across the eagle's leg provides an additional attribution marker. The 1922-D Peace Dollar is the second year of the series designed by Anthony de Francisci. VAM-1T2 preserves the die in a state showing extensive wear and damage, a study in die progression from deterioration through terminal failure at the rim.
