1922-D VAM-1T1

Description

Discovered by John Coxe in September 2006, this Denver Mint Peace Dollar is designated VAM-1T1 under Classification 1T1 II 1, B1a, documenting a Pitted Left Obverse with Die Scratch on the Leg. The obverse shows raised dots and splotches across Liberty's face and the left field, transferred from a rusted die surface where moisture corrosion created pits that appear as raised features on struck coins. Diagonal polishing lines through the tops of the 22 in the date serve as an obverse die marker. The reverse displays three rays above and the first ray below ONE slightly doubled on the left side, accompanied by a long vertical die scratch at the rear of the leg feathers. The combination of die rust pitting, polishing evidence, and reverse doubling on a single die marriage documents multiple stages of die preparation and deterioration. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1922-D Peace Dollar was produced at the Denver Mint during the first full year of Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design, which features the word TRVST on the reverse rather than TRUST, a deliberate classical Latin reference. Denver struck over 15 million Peace Dollars in 1922, the highest D-mint output in the series, generating numerous die varieties across the extensive production run.
