Description

Classified as II 1 B1a (Die Break Y Very High), this 1922-D Peace Dollar VAM-1J features a retained cud created by a die break that runs from the rim at the left of the Y in LIBERTY through the top of Y, extending rightward back to the rim. The break produces displacement above the field, characteristic of retained cuds where the fractured die segment remains partially attached rather than separating entirely. Discovered by David Close, this variety is similar to the 1921-D VAM-1D but distinguished by the higher position of the break through the Y. Die breaks of this magnitude on Peace Dollars are actively pursued by VAM collectors because the retained cud creates a dramatic visual disruption in the LIBERTY inscription. The 1922-D Peace Dollar was struck in substantial quantities at the Denver Mint during the height of the silver dollar production mandated by the Pittman Act, and die breaks from this era reflect the heavy service these dies endured under high-volume production schedules.
