1922-D VAM-1AM

Description

Identified in 2019 by the collector known as colwillys, this 1922-D Peace Dollar carries the designation VAM-1AM and is characterized by die breaks above and below the letters IN in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. A die crack extends from the rim above IN up to the letter L, with a displaced field break — an area where the cracked die section has shifted enough to produce a visible step or raised area on the struck coin's surface. A second die crack runs from IN over to the top of the numeral 1, also accompanied by a displaced field break at IN. The reverse die shows no distinguishing characteristics and is classified as normal (B1a). Displaced field breaks represent a more advanced stage of die deterioration than simple die cracks, as they indicate the cracked section has begun to separate and move relative to the surrounding die face. The 1922-D Peace Dollar was produced in enormous quantities — over 15 million pieces — generating a vast number of working dies and a correspondingly rich census of die varieties. VAM-1AM documents a specific pattern of progressive die failure concentrated around the motto area of the obverse.
