Description
Discovered in January 2010 and recognized as a Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM, the 1922-D VAM-7B carries the elaborate title "Tripled Rev, Gouge Tiara Band, Long Spike Eagle's Shoulder, Break Below L" with the classification II 1 - B2d. The Top 50 designation places this variety among the most significant and sought-after Peace Dollar die marriages, a curated list that identifies varieties considered the most important by collectors and researchers for their combination of visual appeal, diagnostic interest, and historical significance within the series. The obverse reveals a late die state condition: a die crack runs through the N of IN, continuing upward below the L in LIBERTY where it becomes a triangular displaced field break — a severe form of die deterioration where die metal has not merely cracked but has shifted vertically, creating a triangular raised area on the struck coin. The displaced field break below L represents one of the most dramatic forms of die damage documented on Peace Dollars. The die is cataloged by VAMWorld, the principal online repository for Morgan and Peace Dollar die variety documentation. The 1922-D Peace Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint with a mintage of 15,063,000 pieces in 90% silver, weighing 26.73 grams at 38.1 mm diameter. Anthony de Francisci's obverse design, with LIBERTY spelled across the crown of the radiant Liberty portrait and IN GOD WE TRVST integrated into the lower design, provides the inscription areas where the die crack and displaced field break manifest on this Top 50 variety.
