Description
Discovered in May 2010 by Ben Wengel, VAM-1AD documents a die variety on the 1922-D Peace Dollar from the Denver Mint, cataloged by VAMWorld under plate designation 1AD II1 B1a. The defining characteristic is on the reverse, classified as B1a, where a thin curvy thread-like die impression appears on the top right olive leaf and extends into the adjacent right field. This feature likely resulted from foreign material or a die polishing artifact that left a permanent mark on the die surface, transferred to every coin struck afterward. The 1922-D is one of the more available Peace Dollar dates, as Denver produced substantial quantities, making it accessible for collectors pursuing VAM attributions. Anthony de Francisci's design, featuring a radiant Liberty on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse, was introduced in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I. The thread-like die impression distinguishes this variety from other documented 1922-D die marriages, offering a clear identification marker.
