Produced at the Denver Mint, the 1922 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Weak D is part of the Lincoln Wheat Cents 1909-1958 series. Denver was the only mint to strike cents in 1922, and its dies were pressed into unusually long service to meet demand from a mintage of 7,160,000. Heavy die abrasion and clogged mintmark punches during that run left a range of coins on which the D is present but rendered faintly rather than fully. The Weak D designation covers these pieces: the mintmark remains visible under magnification, separating them from the No D varieties in which the mintmark is entirely absent from the die. Distinguishing a genuine Weak D from a No D requires examining the mintmark position under angled light, since a trace of the D disqualifies a coin from the No D attribution. The obverse features Abraham Lincoln facing right, the first real person depicted on a circulating United States coin, and the reverse carries the twin wheat ears flanking ONE CENT designed by Victor David Brenner in 1909.
