1921-S VAM-1AP1
Error
Description
Michael Ash discovered this San Francisco Morgan dollar in April 2007. Cataloged as VAM-1AP1 under classification IV 1 with a D2a reverse, titled Clashed In and s, carrying a rarity rating of 189, this variety preserves evidence of a die clash event on the obverse. A partial incuse impression of In from the reverse inscription IN appears next to Liberty's neck, and a faint partial s from Trust on the reverse shows in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The clashed In was later removed by die file lines, though traces may remain on early die state specimens struck before the polishing. Because 1921 dates were part of the master die, no date position variation exists. This variety appears to be the same as 1921-S VAM-1AP2, and its reverse die is shared with 1921-S VAM-1AP2, 1921-S VAM-9B, and 1921-S VAM-22B, creating a family of four varieties tied by a common reverse. The filed-away clash marks make attribution dependent on detecting residual impressions near the neck. =1921-S VAM-1AP1 Clashed In & s= Discovered by Michael Ash, April 2007.
