Description
1921-S VAM-1AN Die Gouges Above Wings, Scribbling Die Scratches #9 Discovered by Laurence Galbraith, December 2006. Revised December 2022. 1AN IV 1 · D2a (Die Gouges Above Wings) (189) Reverse D2a– Wide die gouge from top of eagle’s right wing thru lower loop of left S in STATES. Gouge further left than VAM 1H. Two faint wide gouges from tip of eagle’s left wing up to rim on right side of F in OF plus faint wide gouge below left A in AMERICA. Likely caused by faulty press feed fingers. Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle’s right leg and between eagle’s left wing and body. Short vertical gouge at bottom center of eagle's breast. DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Die gouges plated here are clearly in a different position than VAM 1H as noted. VP Revised 12/2022 to include scribbling scratches specified on former VAM 1AZ.
