1921-S VAM-1AD

Description

Discovered by Michael Ash in June 2006, the 1921-S VAM-1AD is cataloged as 1AD IV 1 - D2a with the title Die File Lines Obverse Stars and Motto. In 1921 the date was integral to the master die, and accordingly there is no date position variation for any 1921 San Francisco Morgan Dollar — the DPIS classification carries no positional data. The obverse die IV 1 shows die file lines on the upper left and right stars and on the motto, introduced by Mint workers filing those areas to remove die cracks that had developed in service. Die file lines applied to remove cracking indicate the die was experiencing stress but deemed suitable for continued production after remediation. A die scratch through the I in PLURIBUS can also be found on the VAM-1BJ2 discovery coin, which additionally carries vertical polish lines, distinguishing that variety from VAM-1AD. The 1921-S Morgan Dollars represent the end of the series' western production before the Anthony de Francisci-designed Peace Dollar was introduced. Die maintenance varieties like VAM-1AD illustrate the practical realities of early twentieth century die management at the Mint.
