Description
The 1920 (S) Indian Head Eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a Gold Eagle in the Indian Head Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 126,500, this is a scarce issue. The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered war bonnet, facing left and the reverse displays a standing eagle with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1920-S is a major rarity — most of the 126,500 mintage was melted. Fewer than 50 are believed to survive. Estimated market value ranges from $28K to $133K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a raised stars edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8881.
