Description

The 1908 Proof Indian Head Eagle - Matte is a proof Gold Eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Indian Head Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 116, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 7 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered war bonnet, facing left and the reverse displays a standing eagle with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Both "No Motto" and "With Motto" varieties exist after Congress mandated restoration of IN GOD WE TRUST mid-year. Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco struck coins. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value is approximately $36K. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a raised stars edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8890.
