Sole documented cud variety for the 1919 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, CU-1C-1919-01 records a rim-level die break from the year that followed the end of World War I. The 1919 cent was produced during the immediate post-war period when the American economy was transitioning from wartime to peacetime production, and the Philadelphia Mint struck approximately 392.0 million cents — a significant increase from wartime levels but still well below the billion-plus figures that would characterize later decades. When a coining die's rim fractures and a fragment separates, subsequent strikes force planchet metal into the void, building up the raised, featureless blob that defines a cud error. The fact that only one cud has been documented for the entire 1919-P production run suggests either that die quality control was sufficient to catch most rim-cracked dies before they produced many specimens, or that surviving examples remain undiscovered.
