Description

Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1918-S Lincoln Wheat cent preserves evidence of a die clash event on its reverse, where the obverse and reverse dies came together without a planchet between them, transferring design elements from each die into the face of the other. The resulting clash impression on the reverse shows the top of Lincoln's back and the top of his head transferred to the area right of the C in CENT. The profile contour of Lincoln's bust is clearly discernible in this transferred zone, confirming the clash rather than a more ambiguous die scratch or polishing artifact. Die clashes on early Lincoln cents are particularly valued because the soft steel dies used during World War I era production were more susceptible to permanent deformation from clashing events than the harder alloys adopted later. The 1918-S had a mintage of 34.68 million cents. Identifying this specific clash requires examining the reverse field near the denomination under oblique lighting, looking for the characteristic curved contour of Lincoln's profile where it should not appear. The clash marks were not polished away by Mint workers, indicating either that the damage was not noticed during production quality checks or that the die was kept in service despite the visible transfer, as wartime production demands often took precedence over cosmetic die condition.
