Fifth documented repunched mintmark for the 1918 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, Wexler designation 1918-D 1¢ WRPM-005 represents a relatively high RPM count for a single date-mint combination in the early Wheat Cent series. Five distinct RPM dies for one year indicate that mintmark punching at the Philadelphia Mint die preparation facility was particularly inconsistent for the 1918-D production — whether due to personnel changes, rush orders to meet wartime production demands, or simply the cumulative probability inherent in hand-punching hundreds of dies. The year 1918 fell during the final year of World War I, when United States Mint facilities faced pressure to maintain coinage output while also producing medals and other wartime numismatic items.
