1918-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

As the lead RPM listing for the 1918-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety was documented by VarietyVista with an atypical die state sequence. Die markers: UVC-1123, DMR-002. Stage A: Obverse and reverse are EMDS. Stage B: Obverse is MDS; die gouge east of last A of AMERICA — MDS. Stage C: Obverse and reverse are LDS. The EMDS (early-to-mid die state) starting point rather than standard EDS suggests the earliest specimens have not been located, or the die entered production with pre-existing surface wear. The die gouge near the final A of AMERICA provides a mid-state marker. Struck at Denver in 1918 during WWI, composed of 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (3.11 g, 19.05 mm), wartime production demands required a substantial die inventory with each die receiving its D by hand.
