Description

Designated as the primary repunched mintmark for the 1918 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel, RPM-001 carries catalog identifiers UVC-040 and die marriage DMR-003. During this period, each working die received its mintmark through a hand-punching process performed by Mint engravers, and slight misalignments between successive punch applications produced the doubled mintmark impressions that characterize RPM varieties. The 1918-D saw a mintage of 8.36 million pieces at the Denver Mint, a substantial output that nonetheless pales beside Philadelphia's 32.08 million. As the first cataloged RPM for this date, RPM-001 holds a baseline position in the variety's research catalog.
