Bearing die markers UVC-072 and DMR-002, this first documented repunched mintmark for the 1916 Denver Mint Mercury Dime shows a D over D displacement in the north direction — the second D punch impression landing slightly above the first. The researcher's note requesting specimens for new digital photographs and die state study indicates this variety has not been fully documented with modern imaging technology, leaving room for additional die state analysis. The 1916-D Mercury Dime is among the most famous key dates in all of American numismatics, with a mintage of only 264,000 pieces making it the lowest regular-issue mintage in the Mercury Dime series and one of the rarest twentieth-century U.S. coins. Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design — popularly called the Mercury Dime — debuted in 1916 as part of the design renaissance championed by President Theodore Roosevelt.
