1912-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Holding the lead catalog position for repunched mintmarks on the 1912 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cent, RPM-001 is documented by VarietyVista under UVC-007 and DMR-002. Die stage progression reveals extensive late-life damage: Stage C in late die state develops a light die crack across the shoulder and lower bust, accompanied by die clash marks southwest from the second U of UNUM — ghost impressions transferred during a planchet-less strike cycle. Stage D in very late die state adds a light die crack across the lower lapel, documenting further structural deterioration. The clash marks from UNUM indicate at least one event where the dies contacted each other without a planchet between them, leaving reverse lettering imprinted on the obverse die. The 1912-S Lincoln Cent was struck early in the Wheat Cent series' long production run, just three years after its 1909 debut. As RPM-001, this variety represents the most significant repunched mintmark documented for the date, and the progression from late through very late die state with both cracking and clashing provides collectors with multiple staging criteria for individual specimens.
