Description
The 1911 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle produced at the Denver Mint as part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 846,500, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 47% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. The 1911-D and 1911-S are accessible Denver and San Francisco dates for collectors building date sets. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $5.0K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9158.
