Description
A Gold Double Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1909 St. Gaudens Double Eagle belongs to the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 161,215, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 5% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design that produced some of the most beautiful coins ever struck. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $6.5K depending on grade and condition.
