Description
Part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series, the 1909 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle from the Denver Mint. With a mintage of 52,500, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 2% of total production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design that produced some of the most beautiful coins ever struck. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $12K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
