1909 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3134 with die marker reference DMR-020, this 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits light spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE, and both wheat ears and stems. The reverse is identified as RDV-003 — the "No V.D.B." reverse design variant. Victor David Brenner's initials were originally placed on the reverse of the 1909 Lincoln Cent but were removed after public outcry over their perceived prominence, making RDV-003 a product of the post-removal production run. This DDR therefore belongs to the later 1909 die pairs that used reverses without the designer's initials. Die Stage A documents Early Die State with two die cracks on the lower back shoulder reaching Mid Die State, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent inaugurated what would become the longest-running coin design in United States history, with Brenner's portrait of Abraham Lincoln continuing on the obverse to the present day. Philadelphia Mint, bronze composition. The combination of doubled die reverse characteristics with the historically significant No V.D.B. reverse design makes this variety a convergence point for collectors interested in both die variety attribution and the famous 1909 VDB production narrative.
