1909 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Found on the celebrated 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent with V.D.B. initials, DDR-002 displays medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the upper wheat ears, and the upper edges of ONE CENT. The reverse die is identified as RDV-003, the No V.D.B. reverse design variant, meaning this particular die pairing combines a VDB obverse with a reverse lacking Victor David Brenner's initials. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state, Stage B in mid-die state showing die cracks at the K-12:30 and K-6:45 clock positions, and Stage C in late die state which remains unconfirmed. The progressive die crack development across stages provides collectors with a roadmap for identifying the relative striking sequence of individual specimens. As a doubled die reverse on the iconic 1909 VDB cent, this variety occupies a unique intersection of mainstream key-date collecting and specialized die variety study. The doubling is most readily apparent on the E PLURIBUS UNUM lettering, where the extra thickness is strongest and most consistent across surviving examples.
