Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse displays light spread on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA. The variety carries die marker codes UVC-???? and DMR-0?? with designations still pending final classification. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state showing a die crack from the upper right wheat grains to the rim, Stage B in mid die state with a second die crack developing in the same area, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The reverse is noted as RDV-004 (Deep cut N, no V.D.B.) or RDV-003 (Shallow cut N, no V.D.B.), referencing the reverse design variants that track subtle differences in the depth of the N engraving in ONE CENT. As the inaugural year of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Cent — the first regular-issue U.S. coin to bear a president's portrait — the 1909 date carries particular historical weight. Brenner's initials were controversially removed from the reverse mid-year, and the RDV designations on this variety confirm it was struck from a die without the V.D.B. initials.
