Description

First documented reverse rim cud for the 1909 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by Cuds on Coins as CU-1c-1909-01R. The "R" suffix identifies the break as occurring on the reverse die — the twin wheat ears flanking ONE CENT that Victor David Brenner designed for the cent's debut. A rim cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates from the die body entirely, leaving a cavity that fills with planchet metal under striking pressure and produces a raised, featureless mass at the coin's edge. The 1909 date marks the introduction of the Lincoln cent, which replaced the Indian Head design midway through the year and made Abraham Lincoln the first real person to appear on a circulating United States coin. Philadelphia struck 72,702,618 Lincoln cents without the designer's initials in 1909, following the removal of the VDB monogram from the reverse after public criticism of its prominence. A cud from the first year of a fifty-year series records a die failure at the very start of the Lincoln cent's production history.
