1909 VDDR VDDR-029
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista on the 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent, VDDR-029 exhibits light spread on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA, distributing the doubling across several reverse legend elements. Three die stages document the die's progression: Stage A represents early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B shows a light die crack from the middle of the right wheat stalk to the rim at late-mid die state, joined by a second light die crack extending from the bust to the rim. Stage C represents late die state, also unconfirmed. The reverse die variety is identified as RDV-004, characterized by a deep cut N with no V.D.B. initials, though RDV-003, featuring a shallow cut N without V.D.B., may also apply. A distinguishing note in the attribution record places the shoulder die crack farther west than that found on VDDR-041, providing a spatial relationship between the two varieties useful for differentiation. This 1909 Philadelphia Mint cent occupies a pivotal position in the Lincoln Wheat Cent series as a first-year-of-issue doubled die variety.
