Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as the twenty-first doubled die reverse for the 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent, VDDR-021 displays light spread on the TE of UNITED, the F of OF, the TA of STATES, and the M of AMERICA — a scattered pattern affecting selective letter pairs across the reverse inscriptions. The die marker codes remain provisionally assigned (UVC-???? and DMR-0??), and three stages are documented: Stage A is Early Die State, unconfirmed. Stage B shows Early-to-Mid through Mid Die State markers including a light die crack from the lower right wheat stalk to the rim, a light die crack from Lincoln's head to the R of TRUST, a light die crack from the front of the shoulder to the rim, and die chips in the lower R and upper S of TRUST. Stage C is Late Die State, unconfirmed. A significant attribution note identifies this as a Reverse Design Variety (RDV), associated with RDV-004 (deep cut N, no V.D.B.) or RDV-003 (shallow cut N, no V.D.B.), meaning this die belongs to the class of 1909 cent reverses that lack Victor David Brenner's initials. The 1909 Lincoln cent was the inaugural year of Brenner's design, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, and the VDB/no-VDB reverse distinction is among the most important diagnostic features in the entire Lincoln cent series.
