1909 VDDR VDDR-016
Error
Description
Struck during the inaugural year of the Lincoln Wheat Cent — Victor David Brenner's portrait design that debuted in August 1909 — VDDR-016 documents a doubled die reverse with light spread on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA. The reverse die is classified as RDV-002, distinguished from RDV-001 by a deeper cut on the N and the presence of V.D.B. — Brenner's initials that appeared on the earliest 1909 cents before public outcry led to their removal partway through production. A second die stage (Stage B) carries a diagnostic die crack running across the bust to the rim, providing an additional attribution anchor beyond the doubling. Universal Variety Code and Die Marker Reference assignments remain pending, with placeholder designations indicating that formal classification within the VarietyVista framework has not been finalized. The 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln Cent is among the most recognized dates in American numismatics, and doubled die varieties on this first-year issue carry special significance for collectors pursuing variety sets and broader Lincoln Cent die studies.
