1909 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1909 1¢ WDDR-009, this Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a Class VI spread toward the center on both wheat ears and stems, the E of ONE, and to a lesser extent on the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM and the dots — a convergent hub doubling pattern where the secondary impression shifted inward, producing visible displacement on multiple reverse design elements. The photos for this variety were taken by John Bordner for the Wexler Doubled Die Files, as noted in the cross-reference comments. No other cross-references to cataloging systems are currently known. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running east-northeast from the upper right first T of TRUST to the R and a die scratch running southeast from the upper right R in TRUST to the U — two scratches positioned in close proximity within the TRUST motto. Reverse markers include a die scratch running north to south through the left side of the C in CENT and another die scratch running north-northeast to south-southwest in the field to the left of the C in CENT — two parallel markers flanking the C letterform. The 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent holds profound significance as the first year of the Lincoln Cent series, designed by Victor David Brenner and introduced to commemorate the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 1909 Philadelphia issue had a mintage of approximately 72.7 million pieces. Class VI Distorted Hub Doubling produces the characteristic center-directed convergent spread documented here, where design elements across the reverse face show displacement toward the coin's center rather than in a uniform directional shift.
