1909 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1909 1-cent WDDR-006 with no other known cross-references, this Lincoln Wheat Cent reverse presents a nice spread towards the center visible on both wheat ears, the wheat grains, the wheat stems, the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the dots flanking ONE CENT. The spread is strongest on the left side of the reverse. Die markers include a die gouge southeast of the lower right side of the I in LIBERTY on the obverse and a small die gouge on the lower left side of the N in CENT on the reverse. The photos for this variety were taken by John Bordner for the Wexler Doubled Die Files. The 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent occupies a pivotal position in American numismatics as the inaugural year of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln cent design — the first circulating U.S. coin to bear a president's portrait. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 95% copper with 5% tin-and-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, the 1909 cent was produced in substantial quantities to launch the new design. The center-directed spread on both wheat ears and associated elements indicates a radial hub displacement that pushed the secondary impression inward across the reverse die face, with the left side showing the strongest doubling because that area was positioned in the zone of maximum displacement along the hub's movement vector. First-year Lincoln cents with documented doubled die varieties carry particular appeal for collectors seeking the intersection of key-date significance and die variety attribution. The wheat ears provide high-contrast parallel reference elements that make center-directed spread readily visible under magnification.
