Description

From the collection of Robert Jennik, this 1908 Indian Head cent is a remarkable triple-error coin preserving three distinct die anomalies on a single piece. Cataloged as TDC-1C-1908-01 in the MadDieClashes registry, the coin exhibits two separate die clash events — instances where obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, transferring ghostly incuse impressions of each design onto the opposing die face. Every coin subsequently struck from those clashed dies carries faint traces of wrong-side design elements. Beyond the dual clash events, the same coin displays repunched digits in the date, with both the 1 and 8 showing secondary impressions from imprecise punch placement, as well as a misplaced digit — the 0 visible in the denticles below the date, where a date punch accidentally impressed a digit outside its intended location. The convergence of die clash, repunched date, and misplaced digit on a single Indian Head cent makes TDC-1C-1908-01 an exceptionally rich variety coin, documenting multiple production anomalies from Philadelphia's final years of Indian Head cent production before the Lincoln design debuted in 1909.
