1906-O Repunched Date WRPD-001

Description

Displaying a dramatic 1906/19-6 repunched date with the strongest repunching visible on the digits 19, this New Orleans Mint Barber Dime variety shows the date punched to the south of its final position. Repunched dates occurred during the hand-punching era when date digits were individually impressed into working dies, and a misaligned first punch required a corrective second impression. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1906-O 10-cent WRPD-001, this is the first documented repunched date for the date and mint combination. Die markers on the obverse include a short die crack extending east from the front tip of the bust, a strong die scratch running southeast from the upper lip to the C in AMERICA, and two short die scratches above the final A in AMERICA. On the reverse, die scratches run northwest from the lower right of the N in ONE and northwest from the wreath. Struck in 90% silver in Charles E. Barber's design, the 1906-O was produced at the New Orleans Mint during the facility's final years of operation before closing in 1909. The southward displacement of the initial date punch is clearly evident on the 1 and 9.
