Description

Discovered by Mark Kimpton in January 2003, the 1904-S VAM-7 Morgan Dollar is designated "Doubled 4 Top and Profile" and classified as 7 III2 6 - C4a. On the obverse, the numeral 4 in the date is doubled at the very top and above the right side of the middle crossbar, and the Liberty head profile shows slight doubling from the forehead to the chin. The date sits in its normal lateral position. The profile doubling from forehead to chin is particularly noteworthy because it extends across the full length of Liberty's face, providing a broad area for collectors to examine under magnification. The 1904-S holds special significance as the final San Francisco Morgan Dollar before the series concluded its original production run, with no further Morgan Dollars struck until the brief 1921 resumption. San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollars from the final years of production tend to attract strong collector interest, and VAM varieties on the 1904-S date benefit from this terminal-year appeal. The combination of date numeral doubling with profile doubling makes VAM-7 a variety with diagnostics on two distinct areas of the obverse design.
