Description

Martin Field documented the 1904-S VAM-2 in November 1978, attributing it the classification 2 III2 2 - C4a and the working title Far Date, Doubled Profile. The obverse die presents two distinguishing characteristics working in combination. First, the date is positioned further to the right than normal for the issue, placing it clearly outside the expected date range for 1904-S Morgan dollars. Second, Liberty's profile exhibits doubling across multiple facial features: the forward hairline, forehead, nose, lips, and chin all show the shifted impression of a misaligned hub. The legend E PLURIBUS UNUM is additionally doubled slightly toward the lower positions of its letters in the direction of the rim, providing a secondary confirmation point on the obverse. The reverse is attributed to the C4a die. The combination of the far date and the doubled profile makes this a two-element variety, with the doubled profile being the more visually striking of the two diagnostics. Collectors should examine Liberty's nose and chin under magnification, as these tend to show the clearest separation between the primary and secondary impressions. =1904-S VAM-2 Far Date, Doubled Profile= Discovered by Martin Field, November 1978.
