Error
Description
Discovered in April 2024 by John Robert and Alan Scott, the 1904-S VAM-15 Morgan dollar is classified as Slightly Doubled Cap Top, High S — a recently confirmed variety on the final year of San Francisco Morgan dollar production. The obverse (III2 10) shows minor doubling along the upper edge of the Phrygian cap, requiring careful magnified examination. The date falls within the normal position range. Short fine lines at the front edge of Liberty's eye serve as the primary obverse die marker. DPIS RH3/LE5 is recorded for this variety. The reverse (C4d) carries a Large Type V S mint mark set high and upright, with the upper serif aligned with the right edge of the bow knot. Reverse die markers: many fine lines in and around the bow loop, and a single line in the left wing parallel to the body at its junction with the upper leg. Specimens have also been found exhibiting a minor die rotation of approximately five degrees counterclockwise. The 1904-S is the last San Francisco Morgan dollar before the series was suspended, lending added collector significance to any attributed variety on this 90% silver issue.
