Description

Attributed by George Mallis in June 1965, making it one of the earliest VAM attributions in the catalog’s history, this 1904 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-2 with die pair (?) and the description Doubled 1-4. The listing was revised in 2016 to incorporate die polishing at the jaw-neck junction, adding a refinement that reflects continued research into this long-established variety decades after its original cataloging. All four digits of the 1904 date show doubling, providing a comprehensive date-area diagnostic. A vertical bar die marker at the jaw-neck junction results from die polishing, where metal was worked during die maintenance and left a distinctive linear feature. As one of the varieties attributed by George Mallis — an early pioneer in Morgan Dollar die variety research whose work helped establish the foundation for the VAM classification system — VAM-2 connects to the origins of systematic Morgan Dollar variety study.
