Error
Description
Revised in 2018 by Rod Meader to add doubled reverse lettering and two die markers, the 1903 Philadelphia Morgan dollar VAM-9 carries the designation Doubled 1, Near Date, Doubled Reverse Lettering (III2 8, reverse C4l, DPIS B23C). The obverse shows the 1 slightly doubled below its upper crossbar, with the date set farther left than normal. A long horizontal die scratch on the neck-hair above Morgan's initial M aids quick identification. The reverse exhibits hub doubling on legend and motto letters in a pattern similar to VAM-10, with short diagonal polishing lines at the top inside of the space right of the eagle's left leg. The 2018 revision reflects the collaborative nature of VAM research, where improved imaging reveals previously overlooked details. The 1903 Philadelphia Morgan is moderately scarce in higher Mint State grades. Collectors should check date position first — the near-date placement and doubled 1 narrow the field quickly before reverse lettering confirms full attribution.
