1902-S VAM-6

Description

Jim Baxter identified this variety in February 1979, cataloging it as VAM-6 for the 1902 San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollar with the plate designation 6 III2 5 - C4/C3c (Doubled Profile, 2 Olive Reverse) (189). The obverse die shows slight doubling on the nose, lips, and chin of Liberty's profile — three facial features where hub misalignment produced a secondary impression visible under magnification. On the reverse, die C4/C3c carries a V S mint mark tilted to the left and a remarkable anomaly: an extra olive appears to the right of the standard olive on the branch. Extra design elements like the additional olive typically result from hubbing error or die damage that transferred an unintended duplicate of a small detail. The tilted S adds a second attribution point, since the leftward lean distinguishes this die's punch orientation from the numerous upright or right-tilted variants.
