Description

Gary Redfeather (Keil) cataloged this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar in November 2011, and it showcases doubled profile features without the legend letter doubling found on many related varieties. Liberty's profile is doubled at the forehead, nose, lips, and chin, with slight doubling also visible on the ear lobe. The top of the Phrygian cap shows slight doubling as well, though importantly the cap top itself is not doubled — a nuance that helps distinguish VAM-5.2 from similar profile-doubled varieties. Classified as 5.2 III2 5 with a C4a reverse, the date sits at the left edge of the normal lateral position. The primary obverse die marker is a single horizontal die scratch between the wheat kernels below the I in PLURIBUS, while the reverse carries a diagonal die gouge at the right side of the upper tail feathers and a closed 9 in normal lateral position. The absence of legend doubling makes this a profile-only doubled die, concentrating the collector's attention on the portraiture rather than the surrounding text.
