Description
VAM-9 on the 1902-O Morgan Dollar was discovered by Bill Fivaz in July 1972 — Fivaz being best known as the co-author of the Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties, one of the most influential references in U.S. numismatics. Revised in 2009, the variety is catalogued as 9 (revised), obverse III2 4, reverse C4g, die pair 181, with the attribution: Doubled 1 and Reverse Letters. On the obverse, the 1 in the date is doubled below its upper crossbar, and the profile of Liberty herself shows doubling — an unusually broad obverse doubling event. The reverse carries doubling on the legend letters. The 1902-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint. The revised 2009 attribution reflects updated research refining the scope and description of the doubling on this die pair. Cross-reference: VAM-9 (revised), die pair 181.
