Error
Description
Discovered in August 2022 by Michael Dustin, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-17C under Classification III2 10, C4/C3d, documenting a Doubled Ear, 2 Olive Reverse, Pitted A, Gouge Neck, and Clashed n and st. On the obverse, a gouge remains at Liberty's neck, and a clashed die shows a partial n at Liberty's neck and st in the rear hair vee. A rim cud extends below the entire date, strongest at the 0, with an additional die chip in the rim extending left to the second left star. DPIS is B23/C4. Struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909, the 1902-O Morgan Dollar is among the later New Orleans issues in the series. Dustin's 2022 discovery documented multiple overlapping die failures on this variety: the clashed letter transfers, neck gouge, and rim cud all indicate extended die use. The rim cud below the entire date is particularly dramatic, representing progressive die fracture that would have eventually rendered the die unusable had production continued.
