Description

Documented by Martin Field in October 1978, this 1902-O Morgan Dollar combines a near date position with doubled numerals on the 1, 0, and 2 of 1902. The doubling is strongest on the 1, where it appears across the entire bottom crossbar, while the 0 and 2 show doubling confined to their very bottoms — indicating a die preparation anomaly affecting the lower portions with varying intensity. The VAM plate reads 13 III2 7 - C4a with die pair 181, and the reverse die class C4a is a less common classification distinguishing this from prevalent C3a and C3b configurations. Martin Field was a prominent figure in early VAM research, contributing to the foundational catalog during a period of intense discovery. The "Near Date" component means the date is positioned closer to the rim, providing a secondary diagnostic beyond the doubling.
