1901-P VAM-9

Description

VAM-9 on the 1901 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was discovered by Martin Field in March 1983 and is catalogued as 9, obverse III2 1, reverse C4/C3d, die pair 189, under the attribution: 2 Olive Reverse. The classification C4/C3d on the reverse signals a compound die-state, reflecting the distinctive character of this die. The 2 Olive designation indicates an extra olive present in the wreath design — a doubling of the olive fruit element that produces a second olive alongside the original. The doubling on the reverse is detailed: the top of the olive branch at the right of the olives shows doubling, the base of the top and left olive leaf cluster shows doubling, and the bottom of the leaves of the middle and lower olive leaf clusters also carry doubled impressions. This multi-location wreath doubling makes VAM-9 one of the more visually layered 2 Olive varieties in the series. The 1901 Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
