Description

Discovered by Martin Field in December 1981, the 1901-P VAM-8 documents a doubled second 1 in the date — the final digit showing a secondary impression slightly below the base of the primary numeral. Classified as III2 3 with reverse die C3a, the variety's obverse die is grouped in the third positional category, indicating specific date and design element placement characteristics shared with related die pairings. The doubled 1 is a subtle variety requiring careful examination: the secondary impression below the base of the digit may be compressed on circulated specimens where wear gradually diminishes the separation between primary and secondary impressions. Date doubling on Morgan Dollars attracts dedicated collectors because the four-digit date was individually punched into each working die using a logotype, and any irregularity in the punching process — or subsequent hub doubling — could produce measurable doubling on one or more digits. The 1901 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was struck during the waning years of the original series, which would end in 1904 before a final one-year encore in 1921. George T. Morgan's Liberty Head with Phrygian cap adorns the obverse, struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm and 26.73 grams.
