1901-P VAM-23

Description

Discovered in July 2025 by Brent Fogelberg, the 1901-P VAM-23 is among the most recently attributed varieties in the Van Allen-Mallis catalogue for this Philadelphia Morgan dollar date, classified III2 12 / C4/C3l and titled "Slanted Date, Doubled Wing, 2 Olive Reverse." The date is left of normal and tilted upward. Faint doubling on Liberty's nose provides an additional obverse feature, while the primary die marker is a raised dot almost centered within the circular hair void — an unusual feature that makes die confirmation reliable. DPIS: LE3/RH4. The hybrid C4/C3l reverse designation identifies a die combining characteristics of two reverse types. The two-olive reverse shows two olives in the branch rather than the more common count; outer feathers on the eagle's upper left wing are doubled; the rear of the lower arrowhead is doubled; and curved die scratches below the fifth and seventh tail feathers serve as die markers. Morgan dollars are struck in 90% silver and designed by George T. Morgan. The 1901-P variety census continues to expand through active attribution, and VAM-23 is among the newest confirmed additions to this productive Philadelphia date.
