1901-P VAM-21

Description

Discovered by John Coxe in November 2008, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-21 under classification III2 11 with a combined C4/C3j reverse, bearing the descriptive title Doubled Ear and Profile, 2 Olive Reverse. The obverse displays slightly doubled profile lines from the forehead down to the chin, with more pronounced doubling visible at the upper right inside of Liberty's ear and the top right inside of the nostril. On the reverse, a secondary olive appears to the right of the normally positioned olive connected to the olive branch, along with slight doubling on the top of the middle arrow shaft, the base of the olive leaf cluster, the right side of two innermost feathers of the eagle's right wing next to the leg, and the top inside of the eagle's nostril. The dual C4/C3j reverse classification indicates features from both reverse die classes are present. Collectors seeking this variety should focus on the ear and profile doubling as the quickest identification path, then confirm the extra olive on the reverse for a definitive attribution.
